He exhaled slowly, buying time to find the words he needed. “My feelings haven’t changed,” he said, measuring each word before speaking them, “I just don’t
know what the best course of action is right now- how you want to
play this. I know you’ll need to write a report before we arrive at the Citadel.”
Her eyes dropped and the shadow of
a smile appeared on her lips. It looked twisted, rueful on her face.
“I already have.”
“You did?”
She nodded, then hung her head to
stare at the floor again. “I sent the report an hour ago. Couldn’t
sleep until I wrote it. Can’t sleep now that I sent it.”
He stepped forward, standing at
the bottom of the stairs so he could see her face better. Her eyes
flicked towards him and then back down, hiding her expression.
“No worries, Alenko. No broken
fraternization regs to report. I wrote about the-” her breath
hitched, “-the practical advantage of saving a highly-trained field
medic, L2 biotic, and tech over a front-line soldier. Plus, you
outranked her. More commendations in your file.”
Kaidan’s fists clenched, blood roaring into his ears. The anger that sat in his chest felt directionless- he wanted to be angry at her for writing it, angry at himself for putting them in this situation in the first place, angry at the uncaring galaxy. But when he looked at her knuckles, gripping the step she sat on so hard that they turned white, he couldn’t be angry with anyone. Just guilty.
It was his turn to look at his feet. “It’s not right,” he hissed
through clenched teeth.
“No,
Kaidan. It’s not.”
